How to apply

  1. Watch for the advertisement

NABARD does not run this recruitment every year. Check the careers section of nabard.org periodically rather than assuming an annual cycle.

  2. Register on the NABARD portal

Open the Development Assistant link in the careers section and complete new registration, saving the registration number and password.

  3. Choose your office and post

Applications are office-specific and you must be proficient in the local language. Development Assistant (Hindi) has a separate qualification requirement from the general post.

  4. Upload your photograph, signature and declaration

NABARD specifies dimensions and file sizes in the advertisement.

  5. Pay the fee and save the receipt

Pay online, then download the e-receipt and application printout.

Documents to keep ready

  • Valid photo identity proof such as Aadhaar, PAN, passport, driving licence or voter ID
  • Graduation mark-sheets and the degree certificate, establishing the aggregate percentage
  • Documents evidencing Hindi and English as subjects, for Development Assistant (Hindi) applicants
  • Proof of local language proficiency, where available
  • Caste or EWS certificate in the prescribed format, where applicable
  • PwBD certificate issued by the competent authority, where applicable
  • Recent passport-size photograph and signature as uploaded

What the job involves

  • Office support and record work at a NABARD Regional Office or Head Office department.
  • Assisting with the processing of refinance proposals to banks and cooperative institutions.
  • Maintaining documentation for rural development and infrastructure fund schemes.
  • Correspondence, data compilation and reporting support for development programmes.
  • Promotion into the officer cadre through internal examinations over time.
  • The work is developmental and institutional rather than retail branch banking, since NABARD lends to banks rather than to individuals.

How to prepare for NABARD Development Assistant

  • The General Awareness section is where this exam diverges from every other clerical paper. Read NABARD's own annual report and its refinance and rural credit material rather than a generic banking awareness guide.
  • English carries unusual weight in the Preliminary paper. Candidates who treat it as a low-scoring section here are misreading the paper.
  • Because the cycle is irregular, prepare for it as an extension of your IBPS and RBI preparation rather than as a standalone project. The aptitude sections overlap almost completely.
  • Practise typing if a descriptive component is included in the cycle you sit. Candidates lose marks on speed rather than on content.
  • Confirm the section split from the advertisement the day it is published. NABARD has changed the structure between cycles more than the annual recruiters have.

Frequently asked questions

How often is this exam held?

Irregularly. NABARD advertises Development Assistant posts when vacancies arise rather than on an annual calendar, and gaps of several years between cycles are common. Treat any preparation plan as opportunistic rather than scheduled.

Is there an interview?

No. Selection is by the Preliminary and Main examinations followed by a qualifying Language Proficiency Test.

What is Development Assistant (Hindi)?

A separate stream of the same post, requiring Hindi and English as subjects at degree level or a postgraduate qualification in Hindi. The work involves official language implementation alongside the general duties.

How does the General Awareness section differ from other banking exams?

It is weighted towards agriculture, rural credit and NABARD's own mandate rather than general banking. A standard banking awareness book will leave you exposed on refinance, cooperative structures and rural development schemes.

Is NABARD a bank I would work in a branch of?

No. NABARD is a development finance institution that lends to banks and cooperatives rather than to the public, so the work is institutional and administrative rather than retail counter banking.
