Ratio and proportion · solved example
Two numbers are in the ratio 5 : 7. If 6 is added to each, the ratio becomes 11 : 15. What is the smaller number?
Solution
Let the numbers be 5x and 7x. Then (5x + 6) / (7x + 6) = 11 / 15. Cross-multiplying, 15(5x + 6) = 11(7x + 6), so 75x + 90 = 77x + 66, giving 2x = 24 and x = 12. The smaller number is 5 x 12 = 60.
Data interpretation · solved example
What is the average number of female candidates per centre?
Solution
The female counts are 1800, 2400, 3000, 2800 and 2100. Add them in pairs that round conveniently: 1800 + 2100 = 3900 and 2400 + 2800 = 5200, then add 3000 to reach 12100. Dividing by five gives 2420. Dividing by five is the same as doubling and dividing by ten, so 12100 becomes 24200 and then 2420, which is faster than long division.
Simple interest · solved example
At what rate percent per annum will Rs 1200 amount to Rs 1440 in 4 years at simple interest?
Solution
Interest = 1440 − 1200 = 240. Rate = 240 × 100 ÷ (1200 × 4) = 5% per annum.
Partnership · solved example
A and B invest in a business in the ratio 3 : 2. If the total profit is Rs 5000, find A’s share.
Solution
A has 3 of the 5 parts, so A’s share is 5000 × 3/5 = 3000.
