Two numbers are in the ratio 5 : 7. If 6 is added to each, the ratio becomes 11 : 15. What is the smaller number?

Solution

Let the numbers be 5x and 7x. Then (5x + 6) / (7x + 6) = 11 / 15. Cross-multiplying, 15(5x + 6) = 11(7x + 6), so 75x + 90 = 77x + 66, giving 2x = 24 and x = 12. The smaller number is 5 x 12 = 60.

Reasoning Ability · solved example

A person starts from point P and walks 8 km east to reach Q. He turns left and walks 6 km to reach R, turns left again and walks 13 km to reach S, then turns left once more and walks 6 km to reach T. How far is T from P, and in which direction?

Solution

Track the two axes separately. Facing east, a left turn faces north, the next left faces west, and the third faces south. So the moves are 8 km east, 6 km north, 13 km west and 6 km south. The northward and southward legs are both 6 km and cancel exactly, leaving 8 km east against 13 km west, a net 5 km west. Option A carries the right distance with the direction reversed, which is what happens if the larger westward leg is subtracted the wrong way round.

English Language · solved example

Rearrange the following five sentences into a coherent paragraph and answer the question. P. A good monsoon lifts rural incomes and food output. Q. The monsoon is central to India's economy. R. For this reason, its arrival is watched as closely by economists as by farmers. S. Nearly half the country's farmland depends on it for water. T. A weak one, by contrast, can push up prices and slow growth.

English Language · solved example

Choose the pair of words that fits both blanks most appropriately. Although the scheme was ______ with considerable publicity, its ______ across the smaller districts has been slow and uneven.

Solution

'Although' sets the loud beginning against the disappointing follow-through, so the first blank needs the beginning and the second the follow-through. 'Launched' and 'rollout' give exactly that. Option B fails at once, since a scheme withdrawn with publicity has no progress to be slow. Option C puts an intention where the sentence needs something that can be slow and uneven across districts. Option D makes the second half describe a withdrawal, which the concession does not support, and E starts with criticism, which no amount of publicity implies.
