For decades, growth in national income was treated as an unquestioned good, a single number by which the health of a society could be judged. That faith has begun to erode. Gross domestic product counts the cost of cleaning up a disaster but not the value of a forest left standing; it rises when traffic jams burn more fuel, and stays silent on whether the fruits of growth reach the many or the few.
