Solution

The series is perfect squares 2², 3², 4², 5², 6², 7², so 35 is wrong and should be 36.

Mixture and alligation · solved example

A 40-litre mixture of milk and water is in the ratio 3 : 1. How much water must be added to make the ratio 3 : 2?

Solution

In 40 litres split 3 : 1 there are 30 litres of milk and 10 of water. The milk does not change, so for a 3 : 2 ratio the water must become two-thirds of the milk, that is 20 litres. Since 10 are already present, add 20 - 10 = 10 litres.

Mensuration · solved example

The area of a rectangle is 512 square metres and its length is twice its breadth. What is its perimeter?

Solution

With length twice the breadth, the area is 2b x b = 2b squared, so 2b squared = 512 and b squared = 256, giving a breadth of 16 and a length of 32. The perimeter is 2 x (16 + 32) = 96 metres. Note that the perimeter is not proportional to the area, so doubling the area would not double this figure, which is the assumption the spread of options is designed to catch.

In the following question two equations are given. Solve them and choose the relation between x and y. I. x squared - 9x + 20 = 0 II. y squared - 7y + 12 = 0

Solution

Equation I gives (x - 4)(x - 5) = 0, so x is 4 or 5. Equation II gives (y - 3)(y - 4) = 0, so y is 3 or 4. The smallest x, 4, equals the largest y, 4, and otherwise x exceeds y, so x is greater than or equal to y.
