In an election between two candidates, the winner secured 58% of the valid votes and won by 4800 votes. How many valid votes were polled?
Solution
The winner had 58% and the loser 42%, a gap of 16% of the valid votes. That 16% equals the winning margin of 4800, so the total is 4800 / 0.16 = 30000. Turn the margin into a percentage of the whole before dividing.

By what percent did the sales of store T increase from 2023 to 2024?
Solution
T rose from 25 to 35, a rise of 10 on a base of 25. That is 10 / 25 x 100 = 40%. Ten on twenty-five is two fifths, which is 40% without a division if you spot the fraction.
Compound interest · solved example
What is the compound interest on Rs 8000 at 10% per annum for 2 years, compounded annually?
Solution
Over two years at 10%, the amount is 8000 x 1.1 x 1.1 = 9680, so the interest is 9680 - 8000 = 1680. Equivalently, the two-year rate is 10 + 10 + (10 x 10)/100 = 21%, and 21% of 8000 is 1680.

In each, solve for x and y and give the relation: I. x² + 6x − 40 = 0 II. y² − 1y − 90 = 0
Solution
The roots are x = 4, -10 and y = 10, -9. Comparing every x with every y gives "no fixed relation".
