How to approach Quantitative Aptitude in IBPS RRB PO

Speed decides this section. The arithmetic and data-interpretation sets are where the marks are, so the priority is a reliable method and quick calculation rather than exotic shortcuts. Lock down tables, squares and reciprocals, then drill data interpretation until reading the set is faster than solving it.

Data interpretation · solved example

A bank disbursed retail loans across four quarters of a financial year as follows. Q1: Rupees 120 crore. Q2: Rupees 150 crore. Q3: Rupees 180 crore. Q4: Rupees 150 crore.

The disbursement in Q3 is what percent more than the disbursement in Q1?

  • 33.33%
  • 40%
  • 50%Correct
  • 60%
  • 66.67%

Solution

The increase is 180 - 120 = 60 crore, and percentage more is always taken on the quantity being compared against, which is Q1. So 60/120 x 100 = 50%. The common error is dividing by 180 and choosing 33.33%, which answers a different question: by what percent Q1 is less than Q3.

Data interpretation · solved example

The table shows the number of loan applications a bank branch received over four months, and the percentage of those applications that were approved. Month | Applications received | Percentage approved April | 640 | 45% May | 720 | 55% June | 850 | 40% July | 900 | 60%

What is the total number of applications approved across all four months?

  • 1,492
  • 1,508
  • 1,536
  • 1,548
  • 1,564Correct

Solution

Take each month in turn. April is 45% of 640 = 288. May is 55% of 720, which is 396, most easily found as half of 720 plus 5% of it, so 360 + 36. June is 40% of 850 = 340. July is 60% of 900 = 540. Adding: 288 + 396 = 684, plus 340 = 1024, plus 540 = 1564. Keep a running total rather than writing four numbers down and summing at the end, since with sectional timing the second pass is where the seconds go.

Simplification · solved example

Find the value of √0.64 + √1.44.

  • 2.2
  • 1.8
  • 1.6
  • 2.0Correct

Solution

√0.64 = 0.8 and √1.44 = 1.2, so the sum is 2.0.

Average · solved example

The average of 11 results is 50. The average of the first six is 49 and of the last six is 52. Find the sixth result.

  • 52
  • 58
  • 56Correct
  • 54

Solution

The sixth result is counted in both halves, so it equals (6×49) + (6×52) − (11×50) = 294 + 312 − 550 = 56.
