How to approach Quantitative Aptitude in IBPS RRB Clerk

Speed decides this section. The arithmetic and data-interpretation sets are where the marks are, so the priority is a reliable method and quick calculation rather than exotic shortcuts. Lock down tables, squares and reciprocals, then drill data interpretation until reading the set is faster than solving it.

Mensuration · solved example

The perimeter of a square is 56 cm. What is its area in square centimetres?

  • 169
  • 182
  • 196Correct
  • 210
  • 225

Solution

The side is a quarter of the perimeter, 56 / 4 = 14 cm. The area is the side squared, 14 x 14 = 196. Find the side first; squaring the perimeter is the classic slip.

Number series · solved example

What should come in place of the question mark? 7, 9, 16, 25, 41, ?

  • 66Correct
  • 70
  • 74
  • 78
  • 82

Solution

Each term from the third onwards is the sum of the two before it: 7 + 9 = 16, 9 + 16 = 25, and 16 + 25 = 41. So the next term is 25 + 41 = 66. A series that grows more slowly than doubling but faster than a constant difference is usually additive in this way, and it is worth testing early because it takes one subtraction to confirm.

Quadratic equations · solved example

Solve the two equations and choose the correct relation between x and y. I. x^2 - 27x + 180 = 0 II. y^2 - 15y + 56 = 0

  • x is greater than yCorrect
  • x is less than y
  • x is greater than or equal to y
  • x is less than or equal to y
  • x equals y, or no relation can be established

Solution

For the first, 180 splits as 12 and 15 which add to 27, so x is 12 or 15. For the second, 56 splits as 7 and 8 which add to 15, so y is 7 or 8. The smallest x is 12 and the largest y is 8, so every value of x exceeds every value of y and the relation is strictly greater than, option A. Because the ranges do not touch, the answer is a strict inequality rather than the 'or equal to' form, which is the distinction options A and C exist to test.

Simplification · solved example

What is the value of 15% of 480 + 25% of 320?

  • 144
  • 148
  • 152Correct
  • 156
  • 160

Solution

15% of 480 = 480 x 15/100 = 72. 25% of 320 is a quarter of 320 = 80. Adding gives 72 + 80 = 152. Converting percentages to fractions first (15% is 3/20, 25% is 1/4) is faster than multiplying out, and it is the habit that saves seconds across a whole section.
