In IBPS PO prelims, roughly sixteen of the thirty-five reasoning questions come from puzzles and seating arrangement. In mains it is close to twenty of forty-five. No other topic in any section comes close to that concentration. If your reasoning score is not where you want it, this is almost certainly why.
The good news is that puzzles reward method far more than talent, and the method is learnable in a few weeks.
Step one: choose, do not start
The single largest mistake is beginning with the first puzzle printed. Sets are not ordered by difficulty, and the first one is often the worst.
Spend the first sixty to ninety seconds of the section reading every set without solving any of them, and rank them. What you are looking for is determinacy: how much is pinned down at the start.
Signals that a set will resolve quickly:
- A fixed number of people or items, stated explicitly.
- At least one absolute placement: someone sits at an end, on the top floor, in the third position.
- A single parameter to track, or two at most.
- Statements that reference fixed positions rather than only relative ones.
Signals that a set will fight you:
- “Not necessarily in the same order” attached to a long list.
- Three or more parameters: person, month, city, and colour.
- Only relative constraints, all of the form “A sits somewhere to the left of B”.
- An unstated or variable number of positions.
Attempt in order of determinacy. Leave the least determinate set unless time remains. This one habit is worth more than any solving technique below.
Step two: build the right representation
Most lost time is representation time, not deduction time. Learn to recognise the family in a couple of seconds.
Linear. People in a row, either all facing the same way or in two rows facing each other. Draw the positions numbered left to right. Write, in the corner, which direction they face, because “right of” reverses when facing changes and that is the most common careless error in the whole topic.
Circular. Draw the circle and mark positions. Note whether they face the centre or outward, and remember that clockwise and anticlockwise swap when facing outward. For square or rectangular arrangements, note who is at a corner and who is at a mid-side, because the number of neighbours differs.
Floors or boxes. A vertical column, always numbered upward with the lowest at the bottom. Consistency matters more than the direction you choose, but pick one and never change it.
Scheduling. A column of the days, months or dates in fixed order. Add a second column for each additional parameter.
Categorised or comparison. A table with one row per person and one column per parameter. For pure comparison puzzles, a single ordered line with inequality signs is faster than a table.
Step three: order the statements, do not follow them
Statements are deliberately printed in an unhelpful order. Sort them yourself before placing anything:
- Absolute placements first. “P sits at the extreme left.” “The doctor lives on floor four.” These are free information.
- Block constraints next. “Q and R sit together.” “Exactly two people sit between S and T.” Blocks limit possibilities sharply and are the highest-value second move.
- Negative constraints last. “U does not sit adjacent to V.” These rarely place anyone but they eliminate cases fast once you have candidates.
Write the constraints you cannot yet use in a list beside your grid, and cross each one off as you consume it. When you are stuck, the answer is almost always a constraint you noted and forgot, and a visible checklist prevents that.
Step four: branch deliberately
When a constraint permits two placements, do not guess and do not restart. Draw both cases side by side, label them Case 1 and Case 2, and carry them forward together. Apply each subsequent statement to both. Usually one case dies within two statements.
Two disciplines make branching work:
- Branch on the most constrained element, not the first one you notice. Branching on something that appears in four later statements collapses one case quickly. Branching on something that appears once leaves you carrying both cases to the end.
- Never branch twice before resolving. Four parallel cases is the point at which a puzzle stops being worth the time. If you reach it, this was a set you should not have chosen.
Step five: know when to abandon
Set the rule before the exam, because you will not negotiate well with yourself during it.
A workable rule: if you have spent three minutes on a set and no arrangement is complete, leave it. Mark the questions for review and go. The three minutes are already spent. The fourth and fifth minutes are the ones you can still save, and they are worth four or five questions elsewhere.
A worked example of the setup
Consider a typical prelims set. Eight people sit around a circular table facing the centre. Three sit between A and B. C sits second to the right of A. D is an immediate neighbour of neither A nor C.
The setup, before any real deduction:
- Eight positions on a circle, facing centre, so clockwise is to each person’s left.
- Place A anywhere, because on a circle the first placement is free. That is not a guess; it is the removal of a meaningless degree of freedom, and candidates who agonise over it lose thirty seconds for nothing.
- C is second to A’s right, which fixes C given A.
- Three between A and B is measurable in two directions, so this is your branch point, giving Case 1 and Case 2.
- D’s constraint is negative, so hold it aside and use it to kill a case later.
Note what has happened. You have not solved anything, and you already have a fully structured problem with a single clean branch and one elimination tool in reserve. Reaching that state within forty-five seconds is the skill. The deduction that follows is mechanical.
How to practise
Not by doing more puzzles end to end. Do this instead, for two weeks:
- Setup drill. Twenty puzzles a day, but only draw the grid, place the absolute information, list the unused constraints and identify the branch point. Then stop and check whether your structure was right. Ten minutes total, and it is the highest-return reasoning practice there is.
- Selection drill. Take four sets, and without solving them, rank the order you would attempt them in. Then solve all four and see whether your ranking was correct.
- Full sets under a clock, but only twice a week, and always followed by asking which set you should not have attempted.
Then take a full-length mock test and check the topic breakdown on your result page. If puzzles are still your weakest block by accuracy but no longer your worst by time spent, the method is working even before the score moves.
Frequently asked questions
How many puzzle sets should I attempt in IBPS PO prelims?
Usually two of the three or four sets on offer, occasionally three if the paper is kind. Attempting all of them is how candidates lose the reasoning section, because the hardest set can consume eight of your twenty minutes and still not resolve.
How do I get faster at puzzles?
By practising the setup rather than the solving. Most time is lost deciding how to represent the puzzle, not deducing from it. Drill twenty puzzles doing nothing but drawing the correct grid and placing the definite information, then stop. Speed comes from instant recognition of structure.
What if my puzzle has two possible arrangements?
That is normal and intended in uncertain puzzles. Carry both cases forward in parallel columns and use the later statements to eliminate one. Do not restart. Candidates who abandon a puzzle the moment it branches leave marks on the table, because branching is often the intended path to the answer.
