The word CURTAIL is used in three sentences below. Identify the sentence or sentences in which it is used correctly. I. The government moved to curtail spending in the final quarter of the year. II. Heavy rain forced the organisers to curtail the ceremony. III. The new policy is expected to curtail investment in the sector, which the minister described as a welcome boost.
Solution
'Curtail' means to reduce something or cut it short. Sentence I uses it of spending being reduced and sentence II of a ceremony being cut short, so both are correct. Sentence III is wrong not because of the verb's meaning but because of the sentence around it: curtailing investment reduces it, which cannot be a 'welcome boost'. That makes the sentence contradict itself. In this question type, always read to the end of the sentence, since the error is often placed after the highlighted word rather than at it.

One-third of the marks for a question is deducted for a wrong answer; each question carries 2 marks. Every question has a fifth option (E) that you must mark if you leave it unattempted, or one-third is deducted.
