A train 200 m long runs at 72 km/h. How many seconds does it take to cross a pole?
- 12
- 15
- 8
- 10Correct
Solution
72 km/h = 20 m/s, so time = 200 ÷ 20 = 10 seconds.

Time, speed and distance · solved example
A train 200 m long runs at 72 km/h. How many seconds does it take to cross a pole?
Solution
72 km/h = 20 m/s, so time = 200 ÷ 20 = 10 seconds.
LCM and HCF · solved example
What is the LCM of 12, 18 and 24?
Solution
Write each number as a product of prime factors: 12 = 2 squared x 3, 18 = 2 x 3 squared, and 24 = 2 cubed x 3. The LCM takes the highest power of each prime, which is 2 cubed x 3 squared = 8 x 9 = 72. Check that 72 is divisible by all three: 72/12 = 6, 72/18 = 4 and 72/24 = 3.
Simplification · solved example
Find the value of √324 + √225.
Solution
√324 = 18 and √225 = 15, so the sum is 33. Memorising squares up to 30 makes these instant.
Mensuration · solved example
The perimeter of a rectangle is 40 cm and its length is 12 cm. Find its breadth.
Solution
Half the perimeter is length + breadth = 20, so the breadth is 20 − 12 = 8 cm.
