Typing skill test practice

The typing test is qualifying only, which is exactly why candidates leave it until the week before and then fail it. Ten minutes here tells you whether you have a problem.

Indian Railways is one of the largest railway networks in the world and carries millions of passengers every single day. The network is divided into zones, and each zone is further divided into divisions for the purpose of administration. A station master controls the movement of trains through a station and is responsible for the safety of every train that passes through. Signalling systems, interlocking arrangements and clear communication between adjacent stations make this possible. The work requires attention to detail at all hours, because a single lapse can affect the safety of a great many people. Clerical and accounts staff maintain the records, bills and establishment matters that keep the organisation running. Ticketing staff handle reservations, refunds and parcel bookings, and they deal directly with the travelling public. Together these roles form the non technical popular categories of railway employment, and each of them begins with a computer based test followed by a skill test where the post requires one. Candidates who prepare steadily and practise under a clock tend to do better than those who study for long hours without measuring their speed.

About the real test

  • The typing skill test is qualifying only. It adds nothing to your merit score, but failing it removes you from consideration for that post.
  • The requirement is 30 words per minute in English or 25 in Hindi. You choose one, and Hindi typing uses the Krutidev or Mangal font depending on the board's instructions.
  • No editing tools are available. No backspace, no mouse, no spell check. That is why this practice tool blocks them.
  • It applies to posts such as Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Junior Time Keeper and Senior Clerk cum Typist. Station Master and Traffic Assistant take a computer based aptitude test instead.

How to get from where you are to 30 wpm

Almost everyone who fails this test fails on accuracy rather than raw speed. Because net speed counts only correct characters, a candidate typing at 40 words per minute with 80 per cent accuracy scores 32, while the same person at 34 words per minute with 97 per cent accuracy scores 33. The second is easier to reach and far more robust under pressure.

  1. 1. Fix your accuracy first, ignoring speed. Type slowly enough to stay above 97 per cent for a week. Speed comes back on its own once the movements are correct; errors baked in at high speed take much longer to remove.
  2. 2. Learn to touch type if you do not already. Looking at the keyboard caps you somewhere near 25 words per minute no matter how much you practise, because your eyes are doing work your fingers should be doing.
  3. 3. Practise for fifteen minutes daily, not two hours weekly. Typing is motor learning. It consolidates with sleep between sessions, which is a thing a single long session cannot buy.
  4. 4. Practise without backspace from the start. If you train with corrections available, your accuracy figure is fictional, and the real test will tell you so on a day when it is too late.
  5. 5. Confirm your Hindi layout before you invest weeks in it. Remington and Inscript are entirely different key positions. Practising the wrong one is worse than not practising.

Which stage this sits in

The typing skill test comes after CBT 2, once a board shortlists candidates for document verification. It is pass or fail. Candidates are usually called at a ratio well above the vacancy count, so failing the typing test on a post you would otherwise have won is one of the more painful ways to lose a selection, and one of the most avoidable.

Frequently asked questions

What typing speed is required for RRB NTPC?

Thirty words per minute in English or twenty-five words per minute in Hindi. You choose the language, and the requirement is lower in Hindi because Hindi typing is slower on a standard keyboard layout.

Which NTPC posts require a typing test?

The typing skill test applies to the clerical and accounts posts: Junior Clerk cum Typist, Accounts Clerk cum Typist, Junior Time Keeper and Senior Clerk cum Typist. Station Master and Traffic Assistant instead take a computer based aptitude test, and Commercial cum Ticket Clerk and Goods Train Manager take neither.

Does the typing test add to my score?

No. It is qualifying only, so passing it adds nothing to your merit position. Failing it removes you from consideration for that post while leaving your other post preferences intact.

Can I use backspace in the real test?

No. The test provides no editing tools at all: no backspace, no delete, no mouse and no spell check. This practice tool blocks the same keys, which is uncomfortable but is the only way to build the habit of getting each character right the first time.

Which Hindi font is used?

Boards have used Krutidev and Mangal in the past, and the applicable font is stated in the instructions issued with your call letter. Mangal uses the Inscript layout and Krutidev uses the Remington layout, so practise on the one your notice specifies rather than assuming.

How is speed calculated?

By the standard convention that one word is five characters. Net speed counts only the characters you typed correctly, divided by five, divided by the minutes elapsed. This is why accuracy and speed are not separate goals: errors reduce your speed directly.
