Most study plans fail in the same way. They are built as a daily timetable, the first day gets missed, the backlog becomes unmanageable within a fortnight, and the plan is abandoned along with the guilt attached to it. The problem is not discipline. It is that a daily plan has no mechanism for recovering from an ordinary bad week, and every real life contains ordinary bad weeks.
What follows is built on a weekly cycle instead, which absorbs disruption.
The four phases
Working back from the exam, preparation has four distinct phases with genuinely different activities. Trying to do all four at once is why so much effort produces so little movement.
Phase one, foundations. Roughly eight weeks. Cover the syllabus once, at a level where you can attempt a standard question of each type slowly. Speed is explicitly not the goal here. Sectional practice only, no full-length tests. Start the calculation drill on day one and keep it running through every phase.
Phase two, speed. Roughly six weeks. The syllabus is covered; now the work is doing the same questions faster. Timed sectional tests, every day, on a section rotation. Begin the fraction and squares drill seriously if you have not already. Introduce one full-length mock test a week.
Phase three, selection. Roughly four weeks. Full-length mock tests twice or three times a week, each followed by an analysis session at least as long as the test itself. The skill being built is which questions to attempt, not what to know. This is the phase most candidates skip, and it is the one that separates a 45 from a 65.
Phase four, revision. Final two weeks. No new topics. Revise your error log, revise the current affairs of the last six months, revise your memorised lists, and take two or three mocks to stay in rhythm. Learning a new chapter now costs you revision time and gains almost nothing.
The weekly cycle
Six working days and one review day. The review day is the mechanism that makes the whole thing recoverable.
A weekday, about three hours:
- 10 minutes: calculation drill. Fraction table, squares, tables. Non-negotiable and never skipped, because it compounds.
- 60 minutes: quantitative or general awareness, alternating days.
- 45 minutes: reasoning, every day, because reasoning decays fastest without contact.
- 30 minutes: English for banking, or general science for railways.
- 30 minutes: current affairs, one source only, and written notes.
- Remaining time: a timed sectional test, on the section you did least well on this week.
The review day, about two hours. This is the important one:
- Look at every question you got wrong this week. For each, write down which of three categories it falls in: I did not know the concept, I knew it but made an error, or I should never have attempted it.
- Count the three categories. The largest one tells you what next week should focus on, and it is very often the third.
- Revise your error log from previous weeks, not just this one.
- Plan the coming week’s six days, in specific terms: which topics, which sectional tests.
- If you fell behind this week, drop something from next week rather than adding. The plan must fit the week you actually have.
The error log, which is the whole engine
Keep one document. Every question you get wrong goes in it, with three fields: the question type, why you got it wrong in your own words, and the correction.
Two rules make it work rather than becoming a graveyard:
- Write why in your own words, not the textbook’s. “I applied the successive percentage formula but forgot the sign on the decrease” is useful. “Percentage error” is not.
- Revisit it weekly. A log you write and never reread is a diary. The rereading is where the value is.
Within a month you will notice that the same three or four mistakes account for most of your losses. That concentration is normal and it is good news, because four specific habits are fixable in a way that “get better at quant” is not.
Current affairs, sustainably
The failure pattern is predictable: four sources for two weeks, then nothing for a month, then panic in the final fortnight with six months to cover.
What actually works:
- One source, daily, fifteen to twenty minutes. For banking, weight it towards banking and the economy. For railways, weight it towards schemes, appointments, sports and railway news.
- Write short notes, not highlights. The act of compressing is what makes it stick.
- Revise monthly. At the end of each month, spend an hour on that month’s notes. Six such hours across six months is far more effective than thirty hours in the final week, and it removes the panic entirely.
- Do a daily quiz. Testing recall beats rereading, and the habit is what keeps the streak alive on days when motivation is absent.
If you have a job or college
The plan compresses; it does not change shape.
- Protect the calculation drill and reasoning. Twenty-five minutes total. These decay fastest and recover slowest.
- Move current affairs into dead time. Commute, queue, lunch.
- Do one full-length mock at the weekend, at the same time of day as your actual exam slot, and do the analysis immediately rather than “later”.
- Accept a longer runway. Six to nine months instead of four. This is a genuine trade-off and pretending otherwise leads to burning out at week six.
Two mistakes to avoid
Collecting resources instead of using them. Four books on one subject is not four times the preparation; it is a way of feeling productive while avoiding the discomfort of being tested. One resource per subject, finished, beats five started.
Measuring input instead of output. Hours studied is not a measure of anything. Track these instead: accuracy on timed sectional tests, average time per question, and the count of questions you attempted that you should not have. Those three move when preparation is working and stay flat when it is not, which is exactly what a metric is for.
Where to start today
If you are at the beginning, do these three things this week rather than building an elaborate timetable:
- Read the syllabus for your exam once, properly: IBPS PO or RRB NTPC.
- Take one full-length mock test cold, before studying anything. It will be an unpleasant score and it is the most useful data point you will get, because everything afterwards is measured against it.
- Start the calculation drill and the error log. Both take ten minutes and both compound for the entire preparation.

How many hours a day do I need?
Three to four focused hours daily is enough for most candidates over four to six months. What matters far more than the count is whether the hours are spent on practice and review rather than on reading, and whether you sustain them across months rather than for one intense fortnight.
Should I prepare for banking and railway exams together?
Yes, for the overlap, which is substantial: arithmetic, reasoning and current affairs serve both. Then specialise. Banking needs English and banking awareness; railways needs general science, history, polity and geography. Trying to cover both fully with no shared core is what leads to being mediocre at both.

Do not attempt to make up the backlog. That is the decision that ends most preparations, because the debt compounds and the guilt does more damage than the missed hours. Reset at the next weekly review, drop the lowest-value item from the coming week, and continue.
