Solution

April approvals are 45% of 640. Take 40% and add 5%: 256 + 32 = 288. June approvals are 40% of 850, which is 340. The total is 288 + 340 = 628. Do not average the two percentages and apply the result to the combined applications, which is the usual shortcut error here, because the two months have different bases. Compute each month separately, then add.

Solution

Let the present ages be 4x and 5x. After five years, (4x + 5) / (5x + 5) = 5/6. Cross-multiplying: 6(4x + 5) = 5(5x + 5), so 24x + 30 = 25x + 25, giving x = 5. A's present age is 4x = 20 years, and B's is 25. Verify: after five years they are 25 and 30, which is indeed 5 : 6.

What value should come in place of the question mark? (3/8 of 1440) + (5/12 of 864) = ?

Solution

Divide before multiplying and the numbers stay small. For the first term, 1440 / 8 = 180, and 180 x 3 = 540. For the second, 864 / 12 = 72, and 72 x 5 = 360. The total is 900. Multiplying first would mean handling 4320 and 4320 respectively, which is slower and where errors creep in.
