Solution
Start with 100. After +20% it becomes 120; after −20% of 120 it becomes 96. Net change = −4%, a 4% decrease. Equal ± percentages on different bases never cancel.
Ratio · solved example
Divide Rs 600 in the ratio 2 : 3. What is the larger share?
Solution
Total parts = 2 + 3 = 5. The larger share (3 parts) = 600 × 3/5 = 360 rupees.
Time and work · solved example
A can finish a task in 10 days and B in 15 days. Working together, how many days will they take?
Solution
A's rate = 1/10 per day, B's rate = 1/15 per day. Combined rate = 1/10 + 1/15 = 5/30 = 1/6. So together they finish in 6 days.
Simple interest · solved example
Find the simple interest on Rs 2,000 at 5% per annum for 4 years.
Solution
SI = P × R × T / 100 = 2000 × 5 × 4 / 100 = 400 rupees.
