After a run of banking and RBI roundups, today is a national and international affairs day — the kind that feeds the general-awareness sections of SSC, banking and state PSC papers rather than the banking-awareness one. Two stories are worth your notebook: what the US Ambassador said about the India–US trade deal, and the government’s renewed push on One Nation, One Election.
The trade deal is ‘almost done in principle’
Speaking at The Economic Times World Leaders Forum on 23 August 2026, the US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, said the proposed India–US trade agreement is “almost” finalised in principle, with the remaining work largely a matter of settling the legal and technical language of the text. “The trade deal is, in principle, almost everything is done,” he said, putting the delay down to that final drafting rather than any disagreement on the substance. He set this against a complication coming from the US legislature. A bill moving through the US Congress would allow tariffs of up to 100% on countries that continue to purchase Russian oil — a measure the ambassador said had passed the Senate in an “overwhelmingly bipartisan” vote and which, he acknowledged, “impacts India”. He drew a distinction between that congressional push and the position of the Trump administration, which he said remained focused on ending the Russia–Ukraine war. News18
Gor also described the relationship between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump as a “deep and personal friendship”, and said the India–US relationship would play a defining role on the global stage. IANS
Why this matters for an exam: the examinable facts here are the name and post (Sergio Gor, US Ambassador to India), the forum (ET World Leaders Forum), and the 100% tariff figure on Russian-oil buyers — the sort of who-said-what-and-where question that awareness sections favour.
One Nation, One Election: the 2029 route
On the domestic side, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is examining a plan to align the Assembly elections of the 22 states and Union Territories where it is in power with the 2029 Lok Sabha election, as a first step towards One Nation, One Election (ONOE) — rather than waiting for the 2034 cycle. Of those 22, about 11 are due to go to the polls in the two years before 2029, and synchronising them could mean shortening or extending some Assembly terms. Outlook India
The background is standard polity revision:
- ONOE is the idea of holding Lok Sabha and all State Legislative Assembly elections together, on a single or synchronised schedule, to cut the cost and the near-permanent campaign cycle of staggered polls.
- A High-Level Committee on One Nation, One Election, headed by former President Ram Nath Kovind, submitted its report in March 2024, recommending simultaneous polls in two steps.
- A Constitution Amendment Bill to enable it was introduced in Parliament in December 2024 and referred to a Joint Committee of Parliament chaired by BJP MP P. P. Chaudhary, which is still examining it.
Implementing ONOE for 2029 would need that legislation passed and, in practice, some state Assemblies to accept a shorter or longer term to bring the calendars into line — which is exactly the political question the reported NDA discussions are testing.
What to write in your notebook
Three lines:
- Sergio Gor, the US Ambassador to India, called the India–US trade deal “almost done in principle” at the ET World Leaders Forum (23 August 2026); only the legal and technical text remains. A US Congress bill proposes up to 100% tariffs on buyers of Russian oil.
- The NDA is exploring aligning the Assembly polls of 22 states/UTs with the 2029 Lok Sabha election as the first step towards One Nation, One Election, instead of waiting for 2034.
- ONOE means simultaneous Lok Sabha and State Assembly elections; the Ram Nath Kovind committee reported in March 2024, and the enabling Constitution Amendment Bill is with a Joint Committee of Parliament under P. P. Chaudhary.
