Today’s note is squarely a banking-awareness item, so it matters most if you are sitting a bank exam, but the schemes it touches are fair game in any general-awareness paper. The PSB Confluence 2026 wrapped up with a set of instructions to public sector banks that a paper can turn into two or three easy questions.
The headline: a ‘Banking for Youth’ campaign
At the concluding session of the two-day PSB Confluence 2026, organised by the Department of Financial Services under the Ministry of Finance, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman asked public sector banks to launch a month-long ‘Banking for Youth’ campaign from 2 October 2026 (Gandhi Jayanti), aimed at young citizens above 16 years of age. Business Standard
The idea is that banks should reach young people rather than wait for them to walk into a branch:
- The campaign is to be coordinated by the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) and taken to colleges, universities and skill-building institutions.
- It is meant to build financial awareness early — first account, first salary, higher education, and later entrepreneurship and investment — and to explain credit scores and government-backed credit schemes.
- The IBA could also explore a web- and mobile-friendly portal for young customers, tying into the RuPay–UPI ecosystem you read about yesterday. The Hindu BusinessLine
The other half: priority sector lending
The Confluence also pushed banks on priority sector lending (PSL) — the RBI rule that a share of a bank’s lending must go to specified sectors. The Finance Minister asked banks to:
- Improve the quality and effectiveness of credit to farmers, MSMEs, MUDRA beneficiaries and weaker sections, and watch shortfalls against individual targets and sub-targets.
- Expand credit to farmers growing pulses and oilseeds, to cut import dependence, aligned with the PM Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana. Times Now
What to write in your notebook
Three lines:
- At the PSB Confluence 2026 (Department of Financial Services), the FM called for a month-long ‘Banking for Youth’ campaign from 2 October 2026 for citizens above 16, coordinated by the IBA.
- The youth push ties into financial literacy, credit scores and the RuPay–UPI ecosystem.
- On priority sector lending, banks were told to lift credit quality for farmers, MSMEs and weaker sections and expand lending for pulses and oilseeds under the PM Dhan-Dhaanya Krishi Yojana.
