National: the 80th Independence Day at the Red Fort

On 15 August 2026, Prime Minister Narendra Modi hoisted the National Flag at the Red Fort (Lal Qila), Delhi, and addressed the nation to mark the 80th Independence Day. The flag-hoisting was synchronised with a 21-gun salute by the 1721 Field Battery (Ceremonial), fired with indigenous 105 mm Light Field Guns, and the Prime Minister was assisted by Captain Sonia Singh Chauhan. • India became independent on 15 August 1947, under the Indian Independence Act, 1947. Because 15 August 1947 was itself the first Independence Day, the 2026 event is the 80th, even though 79 years have been completed.
• On Independence Day the Prime Minister hoists the flag at the Red Fort; on Republic Day (26 January) the President unfurls it at Kartavya Path. “Hoisting” (raising a flag from the bottom) is Independence Day; “unfurling” (a flag already at the top) is Republic Day — a distinction examiners like.
• On the first Independence Day, Jawaharlal Nehru, the first Prime Minister, gave the Tryst with Destiny address on the night of 14 to 15 August 1947.

Culture: Vande Mataram at the Red Fort for the first time

This year’s ceremony marked a first: Vande Mataram was rendered at the Red Fort during the Independence Day programme for the first time since independence, in a year the celebrations tie to 150 years of Vande Mataram. Outlook India

• Vande Mataram was written by Bankim Chandra Chattopadhyay (Chatterjee) and later included in his novel Anandamath (1882).
• It was first sung at the 1896 Calcutta session of the Indian National Congress.
• It was adopted as the National Song on 24 January 1950, the same day the Constituent Assembly adopted Jana Gana Mana as the National Anthem, and it has been given equal honour with the anthem. Wikipedia
